Elisa Braem
(Ostend, 1991)Elisa Braem is a sculptor that primarily works with ceramics. It is through this medium that the artist explores the idea of identity and the function of language in the construction of shared cultural horizons. More specifically, her work is interested in all forms of representation that while enabling communication between its members it also establishes differences with the so called ‘Other’. Free from any ideology, Braem stays away from any pre established narrative so as to underline the unstable and ever changing nature of these constructions. This is why the artist focuses her interest in those details that bring her closer to intangible forms of communication —those that by definition are out of the norm and reveal the integrative and universal force of language. The artist finds a beautiful analogy in the sedimentary nature of clay that takes her to notions such as space-time and the processual character of all form of cultural manifestation.
